What are you waiting for?
When you become a member of SCCCU, you become part owner in all that we do.
Santa Cruz Community Credit Union is a nonprofit financial cooperative that promotes economic justice. We are local, independent, and member-owned.
The Santa Cruz Community Credit Union pursues a vision of vital local communities whose members contribute individually and collectively to a just society. In our vision, all people have full access to economic opportunity, and have the resources to make effective financial decisions for themselves, their families, and their communities.
In June 1977, the Santa Cruz Community Credit Union opened its first savings accounts and embarked on what is now over three decades of community service. The founders of SCCCU crafted our guiding principle on improving the quality of life for everyone in our community. We believe in empowering those who have been marginalized by the status quo. Together with our community, SCCCU has attained remarkable achievements by maintaining a steadfast commitment to our mission to promote positive social and economic change.
In 1996 SCCCU received the federal designation as a community development financial institution, thereby recognizing our accomplishments in meeting the needs of our low-income members. In 1997 we received a $1 million grant to open our Watsonville office, which has since experienced impressive growth. In 2000/2001, we received more than $1 million to support our Individual Development Account (IDA) Program serving very low-income people. In 2001, SCCCU won the national Louise Herring Award for Philosophy in Action for our "Asset Development for Low-Income Members" program, a tribute to the effectiveness of our service. SCCCU moved the Watsonville office in 2003 to our current location to accommodate our expanding needs and to serve our 10,000 members better.
Santa Cruz Office
We've come a long way from our first days in 1977 near Harvey West Park when we could (and did) keep our money in a cigar box. Through decades of service, we have proven beyond a doubt that community development credit unions can make a difference. Not-for-profit, self-sufficient community development financial institutions have an impact, and micro-enterprise lending is effective.
Thank you to all our members, staff, volunteers and community for embracing our mission. Thank you for many years of support and believing we can have a positive effect in our community!
