Santa Cruz has a long history of being home to many innovative people and when it comes to building automobile and motorcycle high-performance gear, we have a shining star in our midst. Don Redmon is the owner/operator of Replika Maschinen, an airflow, porting and thermal coating specialty shop. Don's notable history in the racing world as a mechanic eventually led him to open his own shop locally doing cylinder porting and thermal coating in an effort to create faster and more efficient engines.

"The object of my work," Don explains, "is about controlling the air charge heat and friction which leads to better engine efficiency, more power, better protection of the various parts, and extended part life." While making vehicles faster is often the goal, Don also emphasizes that he is able to improve fuel mileage. By combining both mechanical modifications and thermal coating applications, Don's trucking customers have reported increased average mileage on highway hauls from half to one mile per gallon.

In order to open his shop and keep things running smoothly, Don got a loan from the Credit Union. "I'm a small business owner," he says, "and none of the big banks would even consider loaning to me but the Credit Union was happy to give me a loan." Thanks in part to his loan, Don will continue to explore his porting and thermal coating techniques and continue designing engines for former world MX champion riders like Brad Lackey and others.
